Community Health Nurse:
The major areas the Community Health Nurse concentrates on are:
- Cardiovascular health example (your heart, blood pressure and the health of your blood vessels)
- Cancer Control (stop smoking programs, skin cancer issues, information about early detection of breast or bowel cancer)
- Asthma (what is it, what triggers an attack, what to do in an emergency)
- Diabetes (we'll put you in touch with some excellent Diabetes Educators)
- Injury Prevention (the needle and syringe availability program - a major health promotion program reducing the spread of blood borne viruses)
- Mental Health (current we facilitate one support group - the Shepparton Cancer Support Group, we include mental health promotion into all our work)
You can talk to the nurse about any health issue - if we aren't able to deliver up-to-date information we'll hunt it down for you. We are happy to work with individuals and small or large groups. We can deliver health information to your staff at your workplace. The philosophy we work on is that people make the best choices about their health when they have the best information.
The Community Health Nurses also take on the role of Saint Vincent's BreastScreen Information Worker and Sexual Health & Family Planning Nurse. The BreastScreen worker is responsible for promoting the Breastscreen Program. She is available to speak to women individually or in groups about the early detection of breast cancer.
The Sexual Health and Family Planning nurse is available to discuss issues relating to sexual health and family planning. Pregnancy testing is available as well as sensitive pre and post test counselling. Translating this into practical terms means you might find us:
- Facilitating the Living with Cancer Education Program
- Talking to a group of women from a linguistically and culturally diverse background about BreastScreen
- Providing health information to the farmers at the Shepparton Saleyards during Rural Health Week
- Encouraging people with a high risk for heart disease to join an exercise program!
Health Promotion Worker:
The role of the health promotion worker is to work with individuals and the community within the City of Greater Shepparton area, to promote good health and prevent ill health, using a holistic approach to health and well-being. We can offer a range of health promotion education sessions to small and large groups including community groups, workplaces, schools and clubs, on a range of topics including:
- Healthy lifestyles
- Nutrition
- Physical activity
